Mini-Sledding Adventure

Today, we ventured out for a little sledding. Santa was kind enough to leave us a sled. I'm pretty sure that Santa decided to throw this in as a last minute gift after he heard the kids asking for a "bigger" laundry basket.

We weren't really sure where to find a prime sledding spot so we decided to use the hill next to our house. It wasn't smooth enough for solo sledding but with a little help from our master pulls man, we had a great time. The only draw back was the small amount of snow that was being kicked back from Rick running. We, however, knew that it was hit after Baylor stood up from his first ride down and said, "I wanna do that AGAIN!"

a Ward Family Christmas

Most everyone made the long hazardous journey north for our traditonal late Chirstmas Day get together. We had our usual feast of ham and favorites and the kids exchanged gifts. It had been a while since all of the grandkids were together, so I was sure to snap a few pics.

A White CHRISTmas!

Delaney whispered in my ear a few minutes before 7, is it time, mom? It looks light outside! She was patient while I managed to complete a few last minute tasks. We then woke the boys; Jax was moving before his eyes were even open. As you can see, he was extremely excited to see that Santa had left him the crayola maker. Unfortunately, Santa didn't realize that it needs a special light bulb so we haven't exactly tried it out.The kids were totally surprised and just amazed at their big gift from us and their Papa. They almost couldn't believe their eyes. Jax said, "Is this an iPhone?" We then explained that it was an iTouch and that it was a music, game player, and video in one. We followed this closely with a responsibility speech and that we would be guarding them closely. For a bit, they seemed to just look at it as if they couldn't believe it. However, numerous times through the day they mentioned how their gift was so awesome.

Months ago, I knew that I wanted to get each of them a portable DVD player. The car one had been broken for over a year and since the boys and Delaney are beginning to have their own interest , I figured they were old enough for their own. And since we spend our fair share of time in the car, it seemed like a good idea. Then, in recent months the boys really began to love music and requested iPods; this was at the top of their list. The more we thought about it, the more we decided instead of having multiple devices for music and video (not to mention also the need to cart around the DVD's), the smarter device for just a little more cost would be an iTouch. But, should we really get 6 years olds an iTouch? It seemed a bit excessive but in the end, they didn't need any more toys and we decided that it would be something that they would grow with rather than out grow in a year.

Making this purchase is a story of it's own. Toys R' Us ran a great Black Friday midnight special. With each iTouch, you received a $50 gift card. This would be a savings of $150. So, I decided to join the masses of crazy bargain hunting shoppers, hoping that most would hit the wee hour of the morning sales. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. I arrived a little after 11:00 and the line was already wrapped completely around the building. I met a friend so our hour wait wasn't bad and the temperature that evening was chilly but bearable. After I finally made my way into the store, I headed straight to electronics where I found a very long crazy, chaotic line. They were only allowing a limited number of shoppers at a time into the electronics area. We were packed very tight into an isle and I know for at least 20 minutes the line did not move. On several occasions, I almost bailed. Finally, the line moved a bit and one extremely obnoxious woman ahead of me gave up which made my wait more tolerable. Still it was beyond chaotic with more lines forming and trying to merge into the line I was in. Let's just say there were some very cranky people and I knew with each passing moment, the odds of them still being in stock were slim. But, close to an hour later, I finally gained my turn in electronics and was able to make my purchase. This was certainly a true test of patience (I don't do waiting well) and maybe even God's reminder that sometimes good things come to those who wait.

It was a full day of fun. We didn't have as many toys to assemble this year, but we had lots of games and new things to keep us entertained. I still felt like I was moving from one thing to the next all day. And, of course we had to take a few minutes out to play in the snow.

Christmas #2: Evening of the Blizzard

As I mentioned earlier, our gathering Christmas Eve was rather small. We ate, exchanged gifts and everyone had to be on their way home. For once, I suppose hosting all things Christmas was in our favor. I felt bad for all those that had to travel. It was reported that Oklahoma had only once before seen a blizzard alert. This will certainly be a Christmas to remember.

Kick Off

We kicked off our Christmas festivities with a yummy breakfast with Uncle Patrick, Aunt Julie, Nana and Mimi. I let the kids open, a share gift (they had several of those this year) from us. I thought there was no better time to break out the Monopoly game since we had a few extra people on hand and it would keep them occupied until after breakfast. (Rick has instructed the kids to ask me to play everyday of break as a payback for getting them this game). Jax, my little board gamer, has been wanting this game for quite some time and it was a huge hit. I was tickled as they didn't care how much they had to pay for something as long as they could get "change" back. Baylor ended up dropping out and I took his place, but in the end, Jax was our Monopoly champ. The boys were super excited to receive the Super Mario DSi games and Delaney received the lego set she desperately wanted and a Christmas outfit for Pinky, which she had requested. Pinky couldn't go without a Christmas outfit!!!

A Different Christmas Eve

For the past few days, it seems that everyone has been wishing for a white Christmas. Well, I think some are getting more than they bargained for. It's blizzard conditions and for me while the snow is pretty and I am excited that the kids will have a white Christmas, I am a little sad that the weather hampered some of our family members from traveling. This is probably the first Christmas Eve in my life time that I haven't spent with my extended family. It was a much smaller gathering. Luckily, my mom, brother, and my cousin from Sand Springs made the drive safely. We still had lots of great food and a fun evening, but we missed Grandma, Aunts, Uncles, cousins and the fun of having a house full of people.

I am so thankful for my little gifts...

The kids made paper chains at school to count down the days until Christmas and Delaney has faithfully pulled one off every morning as she got out of bed. They are super excited about Santa's arrival and have been talking about it all day. Jax is just most certain that Santa is bringing him a crayola maker and has already planned his day for tomorrow.
Snow or not, we had to leave some food for the reindeer. They are also sure that Rudolph is going to be needed more than ever tonight to guide Santa's sleigh in the blizzard.

Two oatmeal raisin cookies, an Oreo ball, and some milk await Santa.

Between the snow and Santa's upcoming visit, they were very excited and had a little trouble settling down, but Delaney realized that time passes much faster when you are sleeping! So, they are now nestled snug in their beds while visions of games, and crayola makers dance in their heads.

Getting our "Bake On"

I decided this year in addition to making our usual cookies and holiday favorites, we would try making Oreo balls. My team of helpers assembled for a little team work.
Down a man...
There he is...sneaking an Oreo
I forgot to take after pictures. I learned a few things about melting chocolate but other than that they were pretty simple and delicious. They could easily become a new holiday favorite.

Guilty Grins

This evening, shortly after I stepped out of the shower, I was greeted with three quiet, yet smiling faces. This was obviously strange, so I asked, "What are you doing?"

I received some quick, oh nothings, with even bigger grins that looked back and forth at one another. At this point, my mind begins to immediately think that they either accidentally tore open a gift as they were snooping under the tree or maybe even deliberately peeked into one. I said, "You guys look really guilty about something."

Immediately, Jax begin to spill all. Apparently, they had got into a popcorn tin which a student had given me as a gift and ate some popcorn. Of course I didn't really care, and was probably a bit relieved to know all the presents were in tact under the tree. What surprised me most was how they really thought they had done something really sneaky. At that point, I could only grin myself.

I'm sure one of these days they will figure out how to really do something sneaky and truly keep it a secret so I'll just enjoy their innocence for now.

Guess Who?

This morning, Delaney came to me and said, "Look at me. I'm just as perfect as a Christmas present. Who do I look like?"

I knew exactly who she reminded me of but wasn't sure where she was going with her declaration. She proudly exclaimed how she looked like, Grandpa Ron. She exclaimed, "He always wore bows on his head. Right, mom?"

This of course warmed my heart but also was a reminder that she will never truly know her Grandpa Ron but to her he will always be the goofy guy with bows on his head. (My dad was not one to have his picture taken , so some of the only photographs are typically of him on holidays and he was notorious for placing the bow on his head). What has always saddened me most is that my dad never had the opportunity to know his grandchildren. Well, I guess this is Delaney's big shout out to her Grandpa. I know without a doubt that this little girl would have had him wrapped in so many ways.

Party, Party, Party!

I managed to escape work for a few hours so I could attend the kids Christmas Party. This required some extra miles on my part, but it was well worth it. This is when I feel so fortunate to have them in the same class. The kids sang some tunes and then totally rocked it out for, "Run, Run, Rudolph"!

Here is Jax with a mouthful of food and his good friend, Evan. It's fun to see the kids in their school environment and find out what's been going on in their world. Last Thursday, Delaney performed her Christmas Dance as a solo for the entire class. Their teacher reports that the class is just in awe of her talent, and her brothers are her biggest fans. She has since obliged them with a performance almost every day. While I was there, her song began to play and a little boy walked up to her and said, "Delaney's this is your dance song!" We are once again very blessed to have a teacher who seems to bring out the very best in each of them.
After a little party food, I was to help the kids make ginger bread houses. At first, I feared that assisting all three at once might be quite a task, but they did an awesome job. They covered small milk cartons, which turned out to be fairly simple. I tried to be hands off and just let them do it as they wished while following the teachers guidelines. However, I did frustrate Jax as I tried to show him how to place the graham crackers around the carton to build the house. He saw no need for the graham crackers and wanted to skip straight to yellow gum drops.

Sand Springs Christmas Parade

Delaney walked and danced in her first Christmas Parade last Friday evening and I walked with a few mom's closely behind. It was 32 degrees by night fall, but we were bundled up, complete with hand warmers so it didn't quite seem that cold. The boys enjoyed watching the parade and collecting candy. They were even nice enough to collect some for their sister.

We've got Christmas PJ's

The Elf made his special delivery today. I don't think the boys were nearly as excited this year, but of course Miss Drama was excited enough for all of them.

Visiting Santa

We made our annual visit to see Santa Claus. The kids have had their lists ready for several weeks but of course they came up with a few things to add at the last minute, including a crayola maker. (Not sure if Santa can deliver that!) Actually, they really haven't asked for a lot. They've requested DS games, a few board games, and the boys want iPods. (Delaney already has a shuffle). It's kind of sad to see them pass on toys, but honestly they've never been "toy" kids and I know several gifts they have asked for in the past lost their appeal soon after Christmas. They are more in to pretend play with each other. In the past hour, they have played magic show, school, and now the boys are playing Star Wars. We certainly don't need anymore light sabers and they are pretty good at improvising and using the toys they already have fit whatever is called for in their imaginary game. Delaney asked Santa for a Lego set and DS game.
Jax requested the Crayola maker for all of them, a Batman DS game, and iPod.
Baylor requested a Ben 10 DS game (this was new to me), and an iPod.

I know I don't have very many years left of the magic of Christmas so I am enjoying every second while it lasts.
